Families

Chinese families can be some of the warmest and most welcoming people alive. Living and interacting with them is hands down the best way to experience China’s unique & vibrant culture. But don’t just take our word for it… Here are a few others who feel the same way.

“My family and I like music and have found that to be one of our main communicators. We go to concerts and share different music with each other. I am happy to call them some of my best friends.” …Kieran Gopaul, Brown ’07

“My Chinese family opened my eyes to a culture I never thought I’d experience. They took me places and showed me things I never would have imagined doing on my own.” …Charlotte Wesstrom, Texas State ‘07

Each family IHC chooses is put through interviews and background checks to make sure that they speak English and offer the following amenities in their homes:

1 clean bedroom with bed and wardrobe, a clean bathroom with 24-hour hot water and western toilets, TV, phone, wireless internet, heat/air conditioning, washing machine, a kitchen with working amenities, at least one meal per day, and an extra key for the visitor to carry with them.

The screening process includes an inspection of the family’s home, a general description of the nature of their work, school, and extra curricular activities/interests, an outline of their daily schedules, the length of availability for their home, and any other expectations the visitor might have. Furthermore, IHC gives money back to the families each month to ensure that these amenities are kept up.
